ABOUT AARON SCHRAM

I am the Chief Technology Officer of Four Square Ventures—a family office in Grand Rapids, MI. Prior to 4SV, I was a serial startup founder and early-stage CTO. Most recently I was CTO of ēdn (featured on Shark Tank), where I led the company through a successful joint product launch with Apple, bringing to market the first HomeKit-enabled indoor smart garden. I also served as Chief Architect of ēdn’s Cloud infrastructure, which was developed in partnership with Amazon Web Services and featured frequently by AWS in fireside chats, a “This is my architecture” video series, Politico, and onstage at re:Invent (their annual conference attended by nearly people) where ēdn was invited to speak during the AWS IoT ExpressLink product launch.Preceding my time in consumer products, I spent the majority of my startup career in regulated industries, bringing innovations in big data and A.I to market—specifically large-scale data analytics and natural language processing systems. I was the CTO and Chief Architect of Sopris Health, where we developed the first fully A.I-driven digital medical scribe in partnership with Children’s Hospital and Cedars-Sinai. Our innovative use of AWS in a HIPAA-regulated domain led to an AWS case study and a feature in WIRED.Early in my career, I founded and served as CTO of Collective IP (acquired by Wellspring Worldwide), a venture capital-backed natural language processing company that aggregated the global university technology transfer ecosystem into a single specialized analytics platform utilized by Fortune 500 biopharma to identify early-stage business development opportunities.I hold a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Colorado at Boulder, where I contributed novel software architectures and patterns for large-scale data collection and analysis to the field of Software Engineering. My research led to the collection of the largest academic corpus of natural hazard (i.e, mass crisis) related social media data, later used to produce over 50 publications (Project EPIC) in the field of crisis informatics. Outside of my position at Four Square Ventures, you can frequently find me engaging with early-stage software companies and founders through my positions as an invited mentor/advisor at Techstars, High Alpha, MI Rise, Matchstick Ventures, and the Technology Council of West MI. I am on the board of advisors of a number of startups and enjoy speaking to Computer Science students about software engineering, fundraising, and entrepreneurship.
