ABOUT AARON S.
Bridging together the worlds of mental health research and practice with a community-driven lens is my approach to improving the lives of our community members and generating systems-level change. From my practical experiences as a crisis line volunteer and recognizing the risk of burnout within this role, I collaborated with Distress Centre Calgary on a research project to investigate ways to improve crisis line volunteer wellbeing. In addition, my role as a study coordinator brought together the lived experiences of students and caregivers to recommend ways the University of Calgary can better address and support post-secondary students experiencing suicide thoughts and behaviours. I have seen the impact of bringing diverse perspectives and lived experiences to the table in research and decision-making environments, and I plan to continue seeking opportunities to do that.As a student to the University of Alberta’s MEd Counselling Psychology program and as a future psychologist, I plan to continue bridging research and practice in a community-driven way, with a particular focus on supporting 2SLGBTQ+, BIPOC, and immigrant and refugee communities. I am passionate about sharing my experiences with audiences, so please feel free to connect with me and I am happy to chat!
