ABOUT AARON WHITE
I work at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism I lead the Epidemiology and Biometry Branch and serve as the Senior Scientific Advisor to the Director. For 30 years I have studied the health effects of alcohol, including how it produces memory blackouts, impacts brain and other organ function, alters brain development, and how it changes human behavior. I am also interested in understanding how addictions develop, including how environmental influences and early life stress affect us in ways that increase the likelihood that we will engage in maladaptive coping strategies, the role of learning and brain plasticity in the transition from maladaptive coping to addiction, optimal prevention and treatment approaches, and strategies for maintaining long term recovery. Alcohol use disorder is without question a condition of the whole person and the social contexts in which they live. Like other addictions, alcohol use disorder is not just a brain disease. A better understanding of the roles played by various influences, from early life experiences and epigenetics to psychological tendencies and social support, will help to tailor strategies to increase the likelihood of effective prevention, treatment, and recovery for each person.
