About Aaron Parness
I focus on robotic manipulation, developing new capabilities for the fulfillment process both inside and outside the warehouse. As a Director of Applied Science, I lead the Vulcan Stow and Vulcan Pick teams across the the US, Canada, and Germany developing high contact and high clutter robotic manipulation products. In 9 years at JPL, I founded and built the Robotic Prototyping Lab with funding from multiple agencies. We embrace iterative design principles and rapid prototyping processes to quickly invent and develop robotic systems for mobility and manipulation. My final project was leading the Moon Diver Discovery Mission concept through Step-1!Three things I love about my work:1. Being part of the full technology lifecycle, idea to prototypes to infusion2. Field testing: When you take your robot to the desert or the factory floor - you learn how it really works, and it’s always fun3. Working with amazing people with a diversity of expertise. I learn new things at work all the time.

I lead international teams of scientists and engineers working on robotic manipulation. Stowing and picking items are two of the most challenging tasks in e-commerce fulfillment. They are difficult to automate because of the many physical contacts between the robot and items already on shelves, the variety of items that are handled, and the financial motivation for storage density and high reliability. By giving robots better decision making though the strategic use of artificial intelligence, better force control, and better hardware for the job, we\'re overcoming these challenges for our customers.
