Principal Structural Analysis (Stress) Engineer - Research & Technology (Research & Development)
May 2017 — Present
Structural (Stress) Analyst in The Research and Development department responsible for sizing composite & metallic structures and manufacturing tooling. • Led a global team of structural analysts to analyze & re-architect to mitigate negative margins due to thermal transient loading as well as mechanical vibration loading (causing High Cycle Fatigue, HFC) on two jet-engine-exhaust structures (a Nozzle and a Centerbody, aka Plug) which were designed to attenuate particular frequencies of engine noise. Name an inventor on one patent that is pending and another invention disclosure is undergoing internal review. • Contributed to design and performed all analyses to rate two primary structures of a next-gen carbon-epoxy composite spacesuit for an applied internal pressure. • Conducted trade-study to compare structural performance of various stiffener designs intended to improve manufacturability of a thermoplastic-carbon composite Fan Cowl. • Performed non-linear Finite Element Analysis (FEA) with contact interactions to determine max forming pressures allowed on composite manufacturing tools (carbon-carbon sleeves with resin-infused graphite dies) while inside a vacuum-furnace. • Analyzed feasibility of changing an inlet attach-ring from metallic to composite by calculating new margins for field-strength, bolted joint bearing/bypass load interaction (BJSFM), and fastener pull-through. • Created explicit model of composite core to predict Flatwise Compression (FWC) Strength using a post-buckling analysis (Abaqus). Analysis result within 4% of test result. Mentored an intern to further develop the analysis method. • Analyzed a sandwich composite wind-tunnel-test-article to ensure a vacuum load (negative pressure) from a wind tunnel would not disintegrate the panel. Used hand-calculations. • Authored original Matlab-scripts to find First-Ply-Failure and Ultimate Laminate Failure using any one failure criteria of: Max Strain, Max Stress, Tsai-Hill, or Tsai-Wu.
