1. Rural Issues Reporter

   Capital B

   May 2022 — Present · Washington, DC, US

   I am the national rural issues reporter at Capital B News, a Black-led, local and national news nonprofit organization reporting for Black communities across the country- In 2024, I reported on how once-shuttered rural hospitals in-majority Black communities in the South, have been able to work across racial lines to reopen their doors, despite painful histories. Due to a strong proposal, I was credited with the theme of the collaboration and positioned as the lead newsroom. The months-long project, “Bridging Access,” was published as part of a series with the Associated Press and Catch Light- I traveled across rural Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi in 2023 to document the challenges Black communities face to connect to high-speed internet. Capital B received donations as a result of the project, “Disconnected: Rural Black America and the Digital Divide” which was a finalist for the 2024 Institute for Nonprofit News’ Breaking Barriers Award. This work was possible through a grant from Grist and the Center for Rural Strategies.
