About Aalap Herur-Raman

Dr. Aalap Herur-Raman is a Northwestern University alumni, receiving his Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, with a certificate in Engineering Design in 2016. Post graduation, Dr. Herur-Raman ventured into the field of medical device development, which brought him to Washington, DC. He joined a start-up that utilized virtual reality for surgical planning. During his time there, he became skilled in Extended Reality (XR), as well as other 3D technologies. The job required him to work in hospitals, where he discovered his interest for medicine and made the decision to attend medical school. Dr. Herur-Raman attended George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Washington, DC. While in school, he published numerous research papers on the potential uses of 3D and XR technologies in healthcare. He designed a 3D-printed model of an Inguinal Hernia to help medical students better understand its complicated anatomy, and was recognized for his presentation of the work at a national surgical conference. Dr. Herur-Raman was drawn to surgery because of its hands-on, fast-paced, and creative nature, and uses of the latest medical technology.In 2024, Dr. Herur-Raman began working as a General Surgery Resident Physician at Virginia Commonwealth University Health in Richmond, Virginia, and will train for the next seven years to become a General Surgeon. In his free time, Dr. Herur-Raman enjoys cooking, dancing, practicing Capoeira, and spending time with his wife.
