ABOUT A. STEPHEN GILLESPIE

Stephen Gillespie is General Counsel of LetterOne, a private industrial holding company with c. USD 22 billion of assets under management, with responsibility for all legal, risk and compliance matters across the group. Stephen was born and educated in Northern Ireland (Friends\' School Lisburn, 19••••73, Foyle College, Londonderry, 19••••81) and at Trinity College, University of Oxford (19••••84 - BA, Honours (2:1), 1984, MA 1989) and The College of Law in Guildford (19••••85, Law Society Final Exams, 1985). He was admitted as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of England & Wales in 1987 and to the Roll of Solicitors in Ireland in 2017.Stephen\'s work encompasses a wide range of legal and business issues including the management of high stakes, high profile multi-jurisdictional litigation and investigations matters, big ticket M&A transactions and investments, the design and oversight of compensation and incentives structures, HR and employment-related issues, all group compliance and risk issues, reputational management, corporate governance, and counsel to senior management, the Board and shareholders. He has particular expertise in corporate governance, dispute resolution, sanctions, national security, and international trade matters.In private practice, Stephen’s work focused on complex business transactions, including mergers and acquisitions, divestitures, recapitalizations, workouts and restructurings. Until January, 2018, Stephen was a partner in the London office of Gibson, Dunn and Crutcher LLP, co-chair of the firm\'s Global Finance Practice, and a member of the firm\'s Corporate and Private Equity practice groups. From 2006 to 2014, Stephen was the senior partner in the EMEA Debt Finance practice at Kirkland & Ellis International LLP. From 1991 to 2006 he served as a banking partner, head of the Leveraged Finance Practice, and co-head of the Global Banking Practice, at Allen & Overy LLP. He was an Articled Clerk at Stephenson Harwood from 1985 to 1987, and worked for four years (from 1987 to 1991) as an Associate at Freshfields following his admission as a solicitor.Stephen was a founder member of the advisory board for the Oxford University Masters in Law and Finance programme until October, 2022. He is a member of the Finance Committees of Ripon College, Cuddesdon and St. Albans Cathedral and a trustee of the Country Food Trust. He lives in Hertfordshire and in North Devon.
