ABOUT ALEXANDER NORRIS

Good morning! I\'m Alex, and I\'m currently in my final year at St John’s College, Oxford, reading for the BA in Literae Humaniores (Course IA). I am hoping to go into teaching once I graduate, so please do get in touch if you would like to connect!My teaching experience includes over two years of individual tutoring in Latin and Greek, both in-person and online, on an individual basis and through agencies such as Superprof and LessonWise. I have also done over 70 hours of classroom teaching, both at the Stages d\'Anglais organised by Chavagnes International College and the Iris Project\'s Classics Summer School, held at the Cheney School. What is more, I have very much enjoyed volunteering in a pedagogical context as a confirmation catechist for a Catholic parish in Oxford and as a leader in the youth section of my local Lourdes pilgrimage (in addition to four years in the Air Cadets while at school, becoming Head of Section by the end of it).At the moment, I am a Junior Reader of the Canterbury Institute in Oxford and Treasurer of the Russell Society (the Classics Society of St John\'s College, named after Professor Donald Russell). My primary academic interests lie in archaic Greek verse, specifically the interplay between Greek epic and lyric poetry; my undergraduate thesis is in the role of epic allusions in the work of the lyric poet Alcaeus. Linked to this is my fascination in the field of linguistics with the historical development of the Greek language in its various dialects, looking in particular at the pan-Hellenic cultural role of the ‘epic’ or ‘Homeric’ Kunstsprache. More widely, I am also interested in the philosophy of Plato and Aristotle, especially with regard to their views on human virtue.Outside of my academic work, I have been heavily involved in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, where I served as Officer in Command of Force Development at the Oxford University Air Squadron. I also co-founded the Oxford Society of Metaphysics, helped to convene the Taunton Talks series of lectures at Grandpont House, and have served as both Secretary of Oxford Students for Life and Vice President of the Newman Society: The Oxford University Catholic Society.
