About A. Jacob Marks
I established Skram in 2001 and am a self-trained designer and maker. In my work, precious, natural materials accentuate form. I believe that good design and fine workmanship are inextricable. My approach to furniture design is shaped by an aesthetic that emphasizes restraint and refinement. Objects are explorations of proportion, visual weight, balance, and line. The design and manufacture of seating is a singular passion rooted in the interaction of this functional form with the human form, and the ergonomic challenges and sculptural possibilities that naturally follow. Realities of use dictate a primarily rectilinear and utilitarian language for my tables, case goods, etc. Those same realities urge a more complex form on many of my seating designs. Outside design collaborations are of interest. In this avenue, I seek opportunities to collaborate with manufacturers who share a common ethic of enduring design.
