WORK HISTORY
Special Education Teacher Case Manager @Portland Public Schools, Maine
US
As a Special Education Teacher/Case Manager at Deering High School, I develop comprehensive lessons for students with a variety of behavioral and academic needs. I also assess student skills and abilities, using this information to customize lesson planning and modify the curriculum to meet individual student needs. Other responsibilities include representing the school and programs during IEP meetings; advocating for services that support student growth; writing progress notes and other reports to ensure compliance with legal requirements; and collaborating with educational teams to cultivate a schoolwide climate that empowers student learning and wellness. I am proud of my work in this role, which included supporting students during the transition out of hybrid/remote school environments back to full-time, in-person learning for the new academic year. I ensured we had systems in place to address social-emotional challenges related to COVID-19. I also managed a caseload of students to ensure IEP modifications and accommodations were being met in all classrooms and programs.

ABOUT A. G. GILLIS
I have always been committed to improving the world around me and that led me to a career change from entertainment marketing into education. Passionate about inspiring excellence and driving educational equity, I am focused on delivering measurable student success. My optimism and energy allow me to motivate and empower students from diverse backgrounds, and my background outside of education enables real-world examples in the course content I teach. For years, I have been engaging students in athletics and experiential learning, including working as a coach and mentor with the Special Olympics. That team culture and support of one another is replicated in my classroom, where I encourage students to build each other up. Offering a proven record of delivering standards-based education, I remain invested in improving learning outcomes by fostering engagement. This also starts with utilizing assessments properly to set benchmarks and identify program and instructional improvements that can help students achieve their goals. Education is not just about academic skills; true knowledge and success brings together academic content with social and emotional well-being, authentic learning opportunities, and collaboration. I am excited about continuing my career as an educator who creates holistic, inclusive, and equitable educational experiences.
